The Importance of Frameworks and Policies

By Confidis  Published On July 29, 2025

The Olympics are just done and as usual, sport teaches you so much. I watched Manu Bhaker from India win 2 bronze medals and strangely that kicked of an interesting line of thought about the importance of frameworks and policies.

India is a land of extremes with disparities that shock. It has its billionaires as well as people who live in poverty. We have women achievers along with women being discriminated against and being abused.

When I watched Manu Bhaker, I asked myself.

How could an Indian woman achieve so much? What about women in other developing countries?

The answer stared back at me.

It was all about frameworks and policies. Let me explain.

India has over time embraced principles of justice and equality. Our constitution makes everyone equal. Women and men and third gender. High caste or low caste. Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christians, Buddhist, Atheists, Jains or Jews. We are even getting there on LGBTQ rights, slowly.

This is our framework and policy. It exists to give everyone a chance.

Does it mean that it will guarantee that we will have equality? Definitely not.

Does it give us a chance to achieve equality? To give EVERYONE a chance to achieve their potential? DEFINITELY YES.

And there you go!

We have Manu Bhaker standing on the podium. Because our constitution gave her the right to achieve what she wanted to achieve. To highlight the case more strongly, can a woman in Afghanistan achieve this goal? Maybe, but chances are that it will be almost impossible without the right framework and policy. Frameworks and policies may not create guarantees but definitely create possibilities.

Going from a macro national level to a more micro company level.

Let us look at organizations that adopt security frameworks like ISO27001. Does it mean that they become secure from Day 1? Obviously not. But what it does do is that it sets the company on a path to aim for better security controls vis-à-vis those companies that have no policy or framework in place.

So there you have it, frameworks and policies, be it the constitution of a country, an information security policy or commitment to a framework, allows us to create an an environment where things become possible.

Whether it is enabling Manu Bhaker achieve an Olympic Medal or ensuring your company is safe from hackers!
